I’ve been crocheting dish cloths with 100% cotton.  The great thing is that I can knock one out in about 30 minutes.

They have a great texture and I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could wring the water out of them.   I’m giving them as gifts this year, along with a bottle of my favorite non-toxic dishwashing detergent.  I want my gifts to be practical, consumable, and something that can be used.  (Not something that’s shoved into the back of a closet and forgotten.)

I’ve washed mine in the washer and it came out just great, and even softer than before.   The skeins of this yarn are about $2.29 each at Hobby Lobby and I can get 3-4 cloths out of them, depending on how big they are.  Just be sure to look for 100% cotton.  Yarn is also available at Hancock Fabrics and Jo Ann’s.
